Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the county border betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to Roman times, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coinage uncovered nearby show evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up suggest that they were settling the neighbourhood most likely from the sixth century. The settlement as it was was not cited till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a significantly greater area than only the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not put in prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).
