Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historical past going back to the Roman era, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is placed very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coinage picked up in close proximity offer evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market in around the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed mean that they were inhabiting the local area probably from the 6th Century. The village as such wasn't reported till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a far bigger area than only the town by itself, and included the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name may likely have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't added till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the succeeding decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that has seen greater development in the past several years.
