Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a story stretching back to the Roman period, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coins stumbled on near by give proof of this. The early Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who used the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled upon mean that they were settling the region probably since the sixth century. The village as it was isn't documented until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a lot greater area than just the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name could quite possibly have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not appended before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the coming years and the construction of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town which has witnessed accelerated development in modern times.
