Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the boundary in between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a historic past going back to Roman times, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historical relics and coinage stumbled on in the area give proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and relics picked up show that they were residing in the local area perhaps since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then isn't remarked upon until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a lot wider area than merely the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not added till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing during the following generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand.
