The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be added on till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to an assortment of tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
