Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the border between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a past stretching back to Roman times, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lays near to the Chilterns and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins unearthed in the area show proof of this. The early Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered suggest that they were residing in the local area almost certainly from the 6th Century. The commune as it was wasn't cited till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a substantially bigger area than just the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be inserted prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the succeeding decades and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town that has witnessed greater development in current times.
