Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of around 37,000 and a history going back to Roman times, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade it is about midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it stands next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage picked up in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts found mean that they were inhabiting the region most likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as such isn't listed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, incorporated a way larger area compared to the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't added until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to an assortment of tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
