Located in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace close to 37,000 and a story stretching back to Roman days, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there existed settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coins found near by give proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics uncovered suggest that they were inhabiting the local area perhaps from the sixth century. The settlement as such isn't referred to till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a far bigger area than only the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get added till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
