Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a past harping back to Roman times, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and is about midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is found close to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coins uncovered in the area show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the vicinity almost certainly from the 6th Century. The village as it was then is not listed till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a far wider area than just the town itself, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town might have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be added on until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the following years and the arrival of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a successful market town that has seen increased development in the past few decades.
