Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a historical past harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is found close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coinage discovered in close proximity show proof of this. The historical Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, came through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were dwelling in the local area more than likely from the sixth century. The village as it was was not observed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a considerably greater area than simply the town alone, and covered the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't put in prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
