Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a story harping back to Roman times, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays very close to the Chilterns and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coins picked up nearby offer proof of this. The historical Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled upon mean that they were staying in the local area almost certainly from the sixth century. The village existing at this time wasn't remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a way wider area than simply the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't put on till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it important to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).
