Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a past going back to Roman days, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is located near to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coinage discovered near by give evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed imply that they were dwelling in the local area probably from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then was not reported until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a substantially greater area than simply the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be put on until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
