Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a past going back to Roman days, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historical relics and coins discovered near by show proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used the market place in around the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were residing in the local area probably from the sixth century. The village existing then wasn't remarked upon until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a significantly wider area than merely the town itself, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get put in till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger over the following decades and the development of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be termed a flourishing market town that's seen greater development in the past few decades.
