Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historic past harping back to the Roman period, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is placed near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coinage discovered in the area give proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics unearthed show that they were settling the local area undoubtedly from the sixth century. The village existing at this time isn't reported until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a substantially bigger area than merely the town itself, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't included before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the succeeding decades and the building of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prosperous market town that has witnessed greater development in the past few years.
