Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a story going back to Roman times, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins uncovered nearby give evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market in around the 10th Century, and antiquities found show that they were settling the region probably since the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time is not described until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a far greater area than only the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get inserted prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing throughout the coming years and the arrival of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a growing market town that's seen improved development in modern times.
