Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage extending back to the times of the Romans, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it can be found close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage uncovered nearby give proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered mean that they were residing in the locale in all probability from the 6th Century. The settlement as such isn't described until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a substantially bigger area than just the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get added prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger over the coming decades and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a successful market town that's seen increased development in the recent past.
