Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a historic past going back to the era of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lies close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early relics and coins found near by show evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market in around the 10th Century, and antiquities found indicate that they were residing in the vicinity most probably from the 6th Century. The settlement as such isn't listed till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a lot wider area compared to the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get added on until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the ensuing generations and the arrival of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be described as a booming market town that has witnessed greater development in modern times.
