Set in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace close to 37,000 and a history extending back to the Roman era, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coinage discovered in close proximity give proof of this. The old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics stumbled on denote that they were settling the locale quite possibly from the 6th Century. The settlement as such is not described till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a much bigger area than merely the town itself, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get put in till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the ensuing years and the coming of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that has witnessed increased development in modern times.
