Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a historic past going back to Roman days, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage uncovered near by give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered mean that they were inhabiting the area probably from the sixth century. The commune existing then is not listed until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a way greater area than only the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't appended before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the following generations and the construction of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop.
