Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard is near the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historic past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early relics and coins unearthed nearby give evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place in around the 10th Century, and relics discovered suggest that they were staying in the region quite likely since the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time is not discussed until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a far greater area than merely the town itself, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may possibly have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not included up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding through the following decades and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that's seen increased development in the last few years.
