Located in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the times of the Romans, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity give proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market during the tenth century, and artefacts found reveal that they were settling the neighbourhood quite likely since the 6th Century. The village as it was is not described till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a far greater area than just the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name will probably have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not put on until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to an assortment of tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger during the succeeding generations and the coming of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a booming market town that's witnessed greater development in the past several years.
