Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the border betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historical past harping back to Roman times, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it lays next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early relics and coins uncovered in close proximity show proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who used the market place during the 10th Century, and relics picked up show that they were settling the locale almost certainly from the sixth century. The commune as it was then was not remarked upon until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a significantly greater area than simply the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get applied up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger through the following generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a blooming market town that has witnessed greater development in modern times.
