Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the Roman era, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it sits near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins uncovered nearby show proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up a market in about the tenth century, and relics picked up suggest that they were settling the neighbourhood quite possibly from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was was not referred to till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a lot greater area than merely the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be inserted up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the succeeding generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that has witnessed increased development in recent times.
