Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old relics and coinage found in close proximity give proof of this. The historical Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics uncovered show that they were residing in the vicinity almost certainly since the sixth century. The village existing then is not reported till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a much greater area than just the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not appended up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger throughout the following decades and the arrival of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop.
