Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county boundary between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there had been settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coinage uncovered in the area give evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who created the market place in around the tenth century, and relics picked up show that they were inhabiting the locale perhaps since the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time isn't discussed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a much bigger area than only the town by itself, and included the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be inserted prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the following decades and the development of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that has witnessed greater development in the past several years.
