Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county border between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a past stretching back to Roman times, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins stumbled upon nearby give evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and relics found indicate that they were residing in the region perhaps from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was was not reported till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a much greater area than simply the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be inserted till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the ensuing years and the coming of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town which has witnessed improved development in recent times.
