Located in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to Roman times, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage discovered in close proximity show evidence of this. The old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts discovered mean that they were inhabiting the locale perhaps since the sixth century. The commune as it was isn't reported till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a much bigger area compared to the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be appended up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger through the ensuing decades and the coming of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a blooming market town which has seen accelerated development in current times.
