Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to the Roman period, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it sits near to the Chilterns and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there had been settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins discovered in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who developed a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities found show that they were settling the vicinity in all probability since the sixth century. The settlement existing then wasn't observed until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a considerably larger area than only the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't included before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the succeeding decades and the coming of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a bustling market town that has witnessed increased development in recent times.
