Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a history going back to the Roman era, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coins discovered nearby give evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were inhabiting the area probably since the 6th Century. The village existing at this time is not remarked upon until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a substantially greater area compared to the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get put in prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
