Based in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a past going back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins uncovered in the area show evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market during the tenth century, and antiquities found show that they were residing in the vicinity very likely from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then is not cited until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a lot wider area than simply the town itself, and included the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get appended before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
