Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Set in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historic past going back to Roman days, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there were settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage stumbled on nearby give evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (made by the Romans), now named the A5, came through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who used a market in about the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered suggest that they were living in the area most probably from the sixth century. The village existing at that time was not referred to till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a significantly larger area compared to the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name may well have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be applied prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to an assortment of tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing over the following years and the construction of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that's seen greater development in the recent past.
