Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the border betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the Roman period, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is found very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coinage unearthed in the area show proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, went through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities picked up suggest that they were staying in the area in all probability from the 6th Century. The settlement as such is not documented till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a much wider area than simply the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't inserted up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing over the following generations and the arrival of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that's seen improved development in the last few years.
