Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a historical past harping back to the days of the Romans, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage uncovered in close proximity give evidence of this. The old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, went through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts picked up suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood in all probability since the sixth century. The village as such isn't reported till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a substantially wider area than simply the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get put on up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to an assortment of tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
