Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the county boundary in between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it stands next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coinage picked up in the area show evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (made by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered show that they were inhabiting the region perhaps from the 6th Century. The village as it was isn't documented until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a considerably wider area than merely the town itself, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be put on till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the succeeding years and the building of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that has seen increased development in the last few years.
