Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage extending back to the days of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins discovered nearby offer evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled on suggest that they were inhabiting the region most likely since the sixth century. The settlement existing then was not mentioned until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a much larger area than merely the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not appended before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it important to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding throughout the ensuing generations and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that's witnessed improved development in modern times.
