Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is found near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage unearthed in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (built by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled on mean that they were living in the neighbourhood most probably since the sixth century. The village as it was then wasn't observed till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a substantially greater area than only the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get put on up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing over the following years and the appearance of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town which has witnessed accelerated development in current times.
