Situated within the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a past stretching back to the Roman era, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there were settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage discovered near by give proof of this. The old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled on suggest that they were staying in the vicinity quite possibly from the sixth century. The commune as it was then wasn't reported until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a considerably greater area than simply the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't included until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing during the following decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw it expand and develop.
