Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county border betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a story harping back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands near to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coinage discovered in the area offer proof of this. The historic Watling Street (made by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created a market in around the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on denote that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood more than likely from the sixth century. The settlement as it was wasn't remarked upon until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a substantially bigger area than simply the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be added on till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing throughout the succeeding generations and the appearance of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop.
