Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it sits near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coinage stumbled on nearby offer evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market during the tenth century, and relics uncovered show that they were staying in the local area more than likely from the 6th Century. The commune existing at that time isn't described until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a far wider area compared to the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get added on till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding through the following decades and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's witnessed greater development in recent years.
