Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historical past going back to Roman days, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade it is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located next to the Chilterns and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins unearthed nearby give proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market in around the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled on suggest that they were dwelling in the local area probably from the sixth century. The village existing at this time was not cited till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a lot bigger area than merely the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be put in until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it important to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
