Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the county border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the Roman era, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it lies next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there were settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coins found in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities found show that they were settling the locale almost certainly since the sixth century. The commune as it was then wasn't cited till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a lot larger area compared to the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get added up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the coming decades and the arrival of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has seen improved development in recent times.
