Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a historical past extending back to the days of the Romans, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is situated near the Chilterns and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coins stumbled upon in the area offer evidence of this. The early Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who were using a market in around the tenth century, and artefacts discovered suggest that they were settling the local area quite possibly since the 6th Century. The village as it was then isn't discussed till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a way bigger area than simply the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not applied till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the succeeding generations and the development of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that has witnessed greater development in current times.
