Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of around 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the days of the Romans, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there were settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins unearthed in close proximity offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up the market place in about the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled on suggest that they were dwelling in the locale probably since the sixth century. The commune as such wasn't observed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a considerably greater area than only the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may possibly have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be added on up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the following decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a flourishing market town that has witnessed greater development in the past few years.
