Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard sits very near to the boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of about 37,000 and a story going back to Roman times, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands next to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins stumbled on in the area offer evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled on show that they were inhabiting the area in all probability since the sixth century. The settlement as it was wasn't reported until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a significantly larger area compared to the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get put in till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger through the coming generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that has witnessed greater development in recent years.
