Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a story harping back to the era of the Romans, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lies next to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage discovered nearby offer evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in around the tenth century, and relics found indicate that they were inhabiting the region very likely from the 6th Century. The village as it was is not reported until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a far wider area compared to the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name could quite possibly have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not appended before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to an assortment of tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the succeeding years and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that's witnessed improved development in recent years.
