Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a historic past extending back to the Roman era, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coins picked up in close proximity give evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market in about the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up suggest that they were staying in the neighbourhood most probably since the sixth century. The settlement as such wasn't reported till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a far wider area than only the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be added on prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a number of tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the following generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop.
