Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a heritage extending back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it stands very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage unearthed in the area offer evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities found suggest that they were living in the vicinity in all probability from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then isn't documented till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a far greater area than just the town itself, and contained the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be applied prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the following decades and the coming of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the recent past.
