Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the county boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of about 37,000 and a story going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lays near the Chilterns and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there had been settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old relics and coinage discovered in the area show proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered show that they were settling the local area quite possibly from the 6th Century. The commune as such isn't observed till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a way greater area than simply the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town will have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be put in prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger over the succeeding years and the construction of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town that has witnessed increased development in the past several years.
