Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace close to 37,000 and a history harping back to Roman days, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits near the Chilterns and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coins picked up in the area show proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon denote that they were settling the region most probably since the sixth century. The settlement as such isn't mentioned till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a substantially bigger area than simply the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name may perhaps have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not added on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the following generations and the arrival of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has seen greater development in the past few decades.
