Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace close to thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the Roman era, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is located close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coinage found nearby give evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (made by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who set up a market in about the tenth century, and relics unearthed show that they were residing in the neighbourhood probably since the sixth century. The commune as such wasn't mentioned until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a far wider area than merely the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not inserted till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger through the following generations and the construction of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that has seen greater development in the last few years.
