Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the boundary in between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of around 37,000 and a past going back to the times of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it stands near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coins discovered in the area give evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place during the tenth century, and relics unearthed suggest that they were residing in the local area quite likely since the sixth century. The village as it was then was not remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a much greater area than just the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get added until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing over the following years and the construction of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has witnessed greater development in the past several years.
