Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county boundary between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past going back to the Roman period, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage uncovered in the area give proof of this. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place in about the tenth century, and antiquities found show that they were inhabiting the region undoubtedly since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then isn't remarked upon until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a way larger area than merely the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be added before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger over the succeeding generations and the construction of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that has witnessed improved development in the last few years.
