Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a history stretching back to Roman days, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is located close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, old relics and coinage uncovered near by give evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics discovered show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood more than likely from the sixth century. The settlement existing then was not remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, comprised a significantly larger area compared to the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get included till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it a necessity to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger through the succeeding years and the coming of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a booming market town that's seen increased development in recent years.
