The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artifacts and coins unearthed nearby show evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were dwelling in the region most likely from the 6th Century. The village as it was then wasn't observed till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a lot larger area than simply the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be applied before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a great many tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the ensuing years and the arrival of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow.
