Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage going back to Roman days, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coins picked up in the area offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place in about the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were staying in the area almost certainly from the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time isn't described until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a way larger area than simply the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get included till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger over the coming years and the development of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a bustling market town which has seen accelerated development in recent years.
