Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is near the border in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a heritage going back to Roman days, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lays near the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there had been settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins unearthed nearby show proof of this. The early Watling Street (established by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who introduced the market place in around the tenth century, and artefacts found indicate that they were residing in the area almost certainly from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then isn't remarked upon till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a significantly greater area than simply the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name may well have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't put on till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the coming generations and the building of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that's seen increased development in the recent past.
