Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is near the boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to Roman days, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is found near the Chilterns and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage found in the area show proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (built by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were settling the locale perhaps since the sixth century. The settlement as it was was not cited till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a substantially wider area than merely the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be appended up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a great many tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the following years and the arrival of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's seen increased development in the last few years.
