Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a past going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found next to the Chilterns and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coins discovered nearby offer proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now named the A5, went through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place in about the tenth century, and relics stumbled on show that they were settling the vicinity most probably from the 6th Century. The village as it was wasn't described until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a far bigger area than just the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name will have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not appended before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants over the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing throughout the succeeding decades and the establishing of of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop.
