Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard is near the border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it stands near to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, old artifacts and coins discovered in the area show evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place during the tenth century, and relics picked up indicate that they were residing in the region quite likely from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then is not documented until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a significantly bigger area than only the town alone, and covered the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be appended up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding throughout the coming years and the building of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that has witnessed increased development in the last few years.
