Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history harping back to the era of the Romans, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is situated very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins stumbled upon in close proximity offer evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics uncovered suggest that they were settling the neighbourhood more than likely since the 6th Century. The village as such was not listed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a much greater area than only the town alone, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't put on up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the succeeding years and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town which has witnessed improved development in the past few decades.
