Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the era of the Romans, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjoining town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lays near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there were settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins stumbled on in close proximity offer proof of this. The old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place in about the tenth century, and artifacts found suggest that they were inhabiting the locale quite possibly from the 6th Century. The commune as such is not discussed until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a considerably greater area than merely the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be put on prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding over the succeeding years and the appearance of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw it develop and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town that has seen increased development in current times.
