Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county boundary in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to the Roman period, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage discovered near by give proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who introduced the market place in about the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled on show that they were residing in the neighbourhood quite likely since the sixth century. The commune as it was then isn't cited till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a lot bigger area than only the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't put in up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the following years and the development of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a busy market town that's witnessed greater development in recent years.
