Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage harping back to Roman days, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coins picked up in close proximity give proof of this. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics unearthed show that they were settling the region most likely from the 6th Century. The village as it was isn't documented until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a significantly bigger area than just the town alone, and included the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't inserted till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the ensuing generations and the building of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town which has seen increased development in the past few decades.
