Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is near the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage going back to the Roman period, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is found very close to the Chilterns and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early artifacts and coinage unearthed in the area show evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up the market place in about the tenth century, and artifacts discovered suggest that they were dwelling in the area quite likely since the sixth century. The village as it was wasn't observed till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a lot wider area than merely the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be inserted before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it vital to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding over the ensuing generations and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a flourishing market town which has witnessed improved development in recent years.
