Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the border between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the Roman period, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is found close to the Chilterns and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coinage picked up in the area give proof of this. The olden Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, went through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who developed a market during the tenth century, and antiquities found show that they were settling the locale more than likely since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then wasn't mentioned till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a far bigger area than merely the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could very well have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get added on prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger during the succeeding years and the construction of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a successful market town that's seen increased development in the past few years.
