Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past harping back to the Roman period, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old artifacts and coins found in the area offer evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (built by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered indicate that they were dwelling in the vicinity almost certainly since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then was not documented until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a significantly larger area than merely the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't added on before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the ensuing generations and the establishing of of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve.
