Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the border betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a story extending back to Roman days, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is found close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity offer evidence of this. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered suggest that they were settling the locale in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The village as it was then was not observed until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a substantially wider area than only the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get put in until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the succeeding years and the appearance of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a bustling market town that's witnessed increased development in the past few decades.
