The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on indicate that they were inhabiting the vicinity most probably since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then isn't documented until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a much wider area than just the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't put on before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
