Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a heritage harping back to Roman days, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage picked up near by show proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered show that they were residing in the local area in all likelihood from the sixth century. The settlement as it was is not reported until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a way greater area than simply the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't inserted prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger over the following generations and the construction of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town which has seen increased development in current times.
