Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past extending back to Roman times, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it can be found near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coinage stumbled on near by offer evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market during the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were residing in the region most probably since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then is not discussed till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, comprised a significantly greater area than only the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be applied till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding throughout the succeeding decades and the construction of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a blooming market town that's seen greater development in the past few decades.
