Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the boundary in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past stretching back to the times of the Romans, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it is located next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coins stumbled on in the area give evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and relics found show that they were settling the vicinity perhaps since the 6th Century. The village as it was is not mentioned until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a considerably wider area than merely the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be inserted before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the ensuing generations and the building of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's witnessed improved development in the past few decades.
