Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around 37,000 and a story going back to the Roman period, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it stands close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage discovered nearby give proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market in around the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered denote that they were settling the local area more than likely since the sixth century. The settlement as such was not reported until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a significantly greater area than just the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name could very well have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be added until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger throughout the coming generations and the establishing of of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a busy market town which has witnessed improved development in the recent past.
