Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there had been settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coins stumbled on nearby offer proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market in around the tenth century, and relics stumbled on indicate that they were residing in the region in all likelihood from the sixth century. The commune as it was then is not remarked upon till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a considerably greater area compared to the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't added before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to an assortment of tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the succeeding decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town which has witnessed greater development in the last few years.
