Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around 37,000 and a past going back to the times of the Romans, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there had been settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity show evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were settling the locale in all probability since the 6th Century. The village as it was then was not discussed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a far bigger area compared to the town alone, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be put on up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger during the coming decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town which has witnessed accelerated development in recent times.
