Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county border betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to 37,000 and a history harping back to Roman days, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies close to the Chilterns and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historical relics and coins picked up near by offer evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who created the market place in about the tenth century, and relics picked up suggest that they were settling the vicinity probably from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then was not referred to till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a substantially wider area than only the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name might have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be added on until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding throughout the following generations and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that's seen improved development in recent times.
