The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities found show that they were residing in the area very likely since the sixth century. The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a way larger area than just the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not put in up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to an assortment of tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
