The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage uncovered in close proximity offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts discovered suggest that they were residing in the vicinity undoubtedly from the sixth century. The settlement as it was wasn't referred to till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a far bigger area than only the town itself, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be added on until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the following generations and the construction of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve.
